Maggie Laubser was a well-known South African artist. Among her works are Indian Girl with Poinsettias and The Harvesters. Maria Magdalena (Maggie) Laubser was born on April 14, 1886, on a farm in the Malmesbury district (now in the Western Cape province of South Africa). Life on the farm later had a big influence on her art. She went to school in Stellenbosch. Laubser later went to Cape Town to take singing lessons. Some of her friends there inspired her to become an artist. She eventually went to Europe to study art. She lived and studied in the Netherlands, England, Belgium, Italy, and Germany. Until 1913 Laubser’s paintings had a calm and realistic style. After World War I (1914–18) she came into contact with a painting style called German Expressionism. Expressionist art tries to show the emotions that objects and events stir up in the artist. Laubser realized that she did not have to paint things precisely as they looked. She created her own style of painting. She started using strong colors and simple lines. She painted many people and rural scenes from South Africa. Her paintings showed her sympathy with and her respect for people. In 1924 Laubser returned to South Africa. She produced and exhibited many works of art. Sometimes she traveled around the country to work. In the 1930s she helped to select art for the British Empire Exhibition in Johannesburg. In 1953 Laubser moved to a house in Strand, near Cape Town. She lived there until her death on May 17, 1973.
