Claude Venard (French, 1913-1999) was one of the founding members of the post-Cubist group known as the Forces Nouvelles (New Forces). A prolific artist, he shared the Cubists’ engagement with still-life subjects, although energized with a more jewel-like palette. Venard also produced countless urbanscapes like Brigade Fluivale, capturing well known monuments of the Parisian neighbourhoods he knew so well. He often mixed sand and other material into his pigments to create a rougher texture to his surfaces, vigorously applied with a palette knife. Venard’s compositions combine Picasso’s energetic sense of structure with Matisse’s love of vivid hues. He was the focus of many one-man exhibitions throughout the world and is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate Gallery, London, and the Dallas Museum of Art, to name but a few.
